James W. Naden

James Whitworth Naden, oldest child and son of Isaac and Elizabeth Naden, was born at Lisbon, Illinois, July 3, 1847, and died at Osage, Iowa, February 1, 1923.

He came to this country in 1855 as a child and settled with his father's family on the old Naden homestead southeast of Orchard, where he spent a great share of his life, and was one of the very early settlers and pioneers of the country.

About 1873 he entered the general mercantile business at Orchard and conducted a general store until 1889, when a fire destroyed his building and stock. He again took up farming and about 1899 removed to the old homestead, where he lived until he came to Osage in 1910, at which place he spent the remainder of his days.

January 2, 1877 he was united in marriage with Rose M. Lamphier at Rockford, Illinois. To this union three children were born; James R., Clare and Earl, the last two dying at an early age. Mrs. Naden departed this life in 1911.

Mr. Naden in early life joined the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Floyd, and was a consistent church member and Christian to the end of his life.

He was a member of the Masonic order of Osage for over fifty years and was at the time of his death one of the few fifty year Masons of this locality.

He was a good Christian, American gentleman, of unusually sound judgment, and possessed of a wonderful memory and wealth of practical information and knowledge. He was a loving husband, a kind and indulgent father and a good neighbor and friend. Despite a life which held more of sorry and suffering than is usual, he never lost patience, but always maintained a sublime Christian resignation to all the sorrows and difficulties which beset him as a mortal. He will be greatly missed, not only by his immediate relatives and friends, but by all who knew him.

He leaves to mourn his loss one son, James R. Naden; Grace, James' wife, two grandchildren, Verne L. and Josephine G., who were his special delight during his last years.

Two brothers, Noah S., now in California and William H. of Charles City, also survive him.

The funeral services were conducted at the home Saturday at 2:30 by Reverend W. T. Smith and interment was in the cemetery at Orchard.
