Dies at Age 88Funeral services for a prominent resident of Mitchell County and a St. Ansgar business man, Oscar Koch 88, were held at his home in St. Ansgar Monday. Mr. Koch had been severely burned while working in his yard in St. Ansgar, November 10, and had been a patient at Mitchell County Memorial Hospital until his death last Tuesday.
The Reverend Carl Wuerffel, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar, was in charge of the services, and burial was in the cemetery there.
Oscar H. Koch was born in Newburg Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, January 21, 1870, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Koch. At an early age he was baptized by the Reverend C. L. Clausen. His early education began in the rural Rosenberg school, with Nellie Eveleth, who later married Lyman McKinley, as his teacher.
In March 1883, the family moved to St. Ansgar where he enrolled in public and parochial school, and was confirmed by the Reverend Mr. Weigner in 1886. During the next five years he completed his public school education, and attended the St. Ansgar Seminary under Professor H. S. Houg and Professor Logensgaard. In 1884, he became associated with his father in the lumber, hardware and implement business.
October 24, 1900, was the opening of the Citizens Bank in St. Ansgar, with J. F. Koch, C. H. Miller, C. J. Colbertson and Oscar H. Koch in charge. Thirty two years later the bank consolidated with St. Ansgar State Bank, with Mr. Koch serving as president until 1945.
His marriage to Mary Homrig of Merrill, Wisconsin took place September 18, 1895. She preceded him in death in 1956.
He is survived by his two children, Mrs. Laura Lane of Madison, Wisconsin and Lloyd Koch of St. Ansgar, two grandchildren.
