PIONEER GROCER OF OSAGE DIES
SOREN MELSON STARTED BUSINESS IN DENMARK

Osage – Funeral services for Soren Melson, 64, will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Champion Funeral Home and at 2 p.m. at the Osage Lutheran church, under the direction of the Rev. T. P. Solem. Burial will be in the Osage cemetery. He died at a hospital in Mason City Monday.

Mr. Melson, who began his apprenticeship in the grocery business in Denmark as a youth, continued this business his entire life. He ws employed prior to 19090 at Gopleruds General Merchandise Store and in 1918 went in the partnership with E. J. Gilles in the grocery department of the Goplerud store.

Later he became sole owner and in 1929 purchased his present business, the Melson Grocery Store on West Main Street, which he continued to operate until failing health forced him to give up work. The store has been operated by his wife for the past year.

Mr. Melson, familiary known as Sam Melson was born in Langeland, Denmark, August 18, 1880. As a young man he came to Osage. In 1904, he married Christine Nielsen.

Mr. Melson has had continuous service in the grocery business until about 5 years ago.

Surviving are his wife, 4 children, Kenneth Melson, Detroit, Michigan; Clarence Melson, Northfield, Minnesota; Lt. Charles Melson in the Southwest Pacific; and Edna Melson, at home. A sister also survives in Denmark.
