OSAGE, IOWA - Marcella M. Parr, 95, of Osage, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 18, 2011, at the Faith Home in Osage.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 22, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Father Jack McClure officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with scripture wake service at 7 p.m.

Marcella was born February 1, 1916, in Chicago, Illinois, to Michael and Pearl (Dillon) Hastings. They moved to the McIntire area and Marcella attended school there. She was valedictorian of her graduating class in 1933. Marcella attended Iowa State Teachers College, earning her teaching certificate. She taught in rural one-room schools in Mitchell County for seven years, teaching at Burr Oak No. 5 near Little Cedar, Wayne Township No. 2 near McIntire, and Pleasant Prairie near St. Ansgar.

Marcella married Charles Parr in 1941. In late 1941, they and their newborn son, Gene, moved to California, where Charles worked in the shipyards during the war years. After the war, Charles, his father, and brother built homes in the Oakland and Hayward, California area.

In 1947, Marcella gave birth to son, Sterling "Stu." In 1948, Charles and Marcella and boys moved back to Iowa. Marcella enjoyed telling friends her first boy was born in Iowa and had his first birthday in California. Her second boy was born in California and had his first birthday in Iowa. In 1948, Marcella and Charles opened Parr's Wallpaper Store in Osage.

Later, they moved to East Main where they continued to sell wall coverings for over 50 years. Marcella did the sales and Charles hung the paper. Marcella did substitute teaching in the Osage schools for many years. She also worked for the Mason City Junior College for eleven years helping young people get their G.E.D. and encouraging anyone into "Life-Long Learning."

Marcella was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a loving daughter, sister, and aunt who always put family first, and a loyal friend who treasured her many friendships that were formed throughout her life. The world is a better place for Mom having lived in it. Her spirit will always be with us and her love will live forever in our hearts.

To you, Mom, may God bless and hold you in the palms of his hands. We will always thank God you were our Mother.

Farewell my Mother, my teacher, and my friend. We will miss you and love you very much.
Marcella is survived by her children, Gene (Carole) Parr of Eden Prairie, Minn.

Sterling "Stu" Parr and fiancé, Glenda Cahalan of Mason City; grandchildren, Timothy (Kadey) Parr and Tammy Vose; and great-grandchildren, Haley Parr and Mercedes Akinsanya.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Don Hastings and Bob Hastings.
