Elva Clara Powers 1869-1950

Funeral rites are pending for Miss Elva Powers, who died Thursday at Mercy Hospital, Mason City; body at Champion Funeral Home.

She was born in Charles City to Alvin and Etta Drew Powers. As a small child she accompanied her parents to Osage. Following completion of grade school education she resided with her grandparents at Laverne, Minnesota.

There she graduated from high school. She taught school for a short time, the completed formal education at Mankato Teachers College, Mankato, Minnesota. She served as instructor in Minnesota and in southern Iowa until health failed. She suffered from arthritis and had been at the home farm near Osage.

She leaves a brother, Robert; three sisters; Jennie; Edith; and Pearl Powers. Preceding her were three sisters; Tina, long time primary instructor in Osage; and Edna and Grace, who died in childhood.

Elva Clara Powers -- death/burial February 7, 1950

According to the 1900 US Census, Elva was born May 1869. But this is in question since the 1940
census shows her as being only 62 years old -- therefore being born about 1878.

The 1940 census shows them living in Osage township, Mitchell County, Iowa:

Powers, Robert Head 59 Born: Iowa
Powers, Elva Sister 62 Born: Iowa
Powers, Pina [Tina] Sister 61 Born: Iowa
Powers, Edith Sister 40 Born: Iowa
