NOTED TEACHER DIES AT OSAGE
HOLD FUNERAL MONDAY FOR MISS TINA POWERS

Osage – Funeral services were to be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Champion Funeral Home for Miss Tina Margaret Powers, 68, for many years an educator in Mitchell County, who died at her home Friday after a long illness. Her late illness began a year ago when she was compelled to give up her work as teacher.

Tina Margaret Powers was born April 30, 1877 in Floyd County, the daughter of Alvin and Etta (Drew) Powers. When she was a young child, her parents moved to Osage. She was graduated from Osage High school, later attending Cedar Valley Seminary in Osage.

At the age of 16 she began teaching. Feeling the need for further training, Miss Tina entered the State Teachers College at Mankato, Minnesota, from which she was graduated. Her talents were then so marked, that she was awarded a scholarship to Chicago University.

Following her graduation from college, she was retained as an instructor at Mankato. Miss Tina was then offered a position in Northfield, Minnesota, as principal and supervisor of an elementary system. Because of her remarkable aptitude in teaching, students were sent to observe her work. She taught for a number of years at Northfield and came back to Osage to be with her mother who was in poor health.

The illness of her mother brought Miss Tina to Osage where she has spent 24 years in the Washington grade building.

Surviving are her 4 sisters, Pearl, Edith, Jennie and Elva, and one brother, Robert, all at home.
