MRS. E. W. STACY DIED SATURDAY AT SISTERS' HOME
Wife of Ed Stacy, Former Osage Groceryman Died After Long Illness.
Mrs. Ed Stacy, one of the communities best-known women passed away Saturday at the home of her sisters, Delia and Frances after a long illness.
Ellen Maria Stacy was born April 24, 1853, at Dover, Illinois the daughter of Homer I. and Amelia L. Stacy. She came with her parents to Mitchell County Iowa in 1856 and lived first at Mitchell and afterward moving to Stacyville.
She was married in 1872 to Edmund W. Stacy and came with her husband to live in Osage in 1876. She had already spent some time in Osage attending the old Cedar Valley Seminary which at that time was located in the present courthouse building.
For nine years she was librarian of the Osage Public Library and later assisted her husband in a store which they conducted until 1918.
Her husband died February 1, 1928, and since she has made her home part of the time with sisters in Osage and part time with her brother. A. I. Stacy, west of town.
In addition to her brother, she is survived by Delia O. and Frances A. Stacy, of Osage and Mrs. Harriet Reeves, of Willmar, Minnesota, besides a number of nephews and nieces.
Mrs. Stacy was a consecrated Christian woman and greatly devoted to her church. She came to Mitchell County two years before the local Congregational Church was founded and she has known every minister the church has had as well as most of its members. She was a friend to everyone and spent much time going about calling upon shut-ins even until within a few weeks of her death. So valuable was her work along this line that the Reverend Lessly often spoke of her as the "associate pastor of the Congregational Church, as other ministers had done before him. She was also a great letter writer and her letters have been treasured by the many who have received them through the years.
Funeral services were conducted by the Reverend Stiles Lessly at the Shelledy Funeral Home, Monday afternoon, December 24, and burial was in the Osage Cemetery.
