"Archie" McLaughlin passed away at his home Sunday afternoon, following a long illness. It had been known for many weeks that he could not recover, and the end came at 6:35 p.m. just three years ago and a day since his wife passed away.

Archibald Robert McLaughlin was born October 2, 1847, near Knowlton, Quebec, Canada, and died Sunday, May 18, 1924, at Osage, Iowa.

He was the third in a family of nine children, born to John and Mary McLaughlin.

In 1866 he came to Castalia, Iowa, and spent two years there before coming to Osage in 1868.

On January 6, 1871, he was married to Sarah Albertine Bishop, the ceremony being performed by Alva Bush. They settled in Osage and for fifty-two years Mr. McLaughlin has occupied the same home.

To them were born three children, two sons who died in infancy and Miss Blanche, county superintendent of schools, who has given her parents care and devotion that has been a beautiful example for the hundreds of children under her supervision. At the time of her mother's death three years ago, Miss McLaughlin had to put her grief aside and attend the strenuous duties that the closing of school brings to her office, and at present is experiencing the same ordeal.

Mr. McLaughlin was one of the prominent men in the founding of the county. He was one of the few who took a part in the discussion as to where the courthouse should be, Mitchell or Osage, he was one of the first depot agents when the Illinois Central line was built, and had his carpenter shop for many years on the corner where the Young Lumber Yards now are. He was a contractor, and among the important buildings he erected are the Catholic and Baptist churches, the first high school and any number of residences.

Besides his daughter he is survived by his brother, J. D. McLaughlin, of Seattle, Washington, and two half brothers and sisters, Owen and Andy, Mrs. Frank Guthrie and Mary Dryburg, all of whom live in Canada.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home, conducted by Reverend W. T. Smith, and burial made beside his wife in the Osage Cemetery.
