Martin A. Gartner, 87

Martin A. Gartner, 87, of Austin, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Austin Medical Center.

He was born April 18, 1916, in Stacyville, Iowa, to Chris and Christina (Weitzel) Gartner.

He graduated from Visitation High School in Stacyville, Iowa and attended welding school in Minneapolis.

On Jan. 29, 1944, he married Dorothy M. Evans in Owatonna.

Martin was employed as a welder and mechanic with the Hormel Foods Corporation for 42 years, retiring in 1978. The Gartners lived in the Waltham area for 34 years before moving back to Austin in 1990.

Martin was a member of the Austin Packers Baseball Team and was an avid sports fan. His favorite pastime was fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Gartner, Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Carmen Gartner, Apple Valley; Thomas and Linda Gartner, Springfield; daughters and son-in-law, Linda and Gary Green, Comfrey; Nancy Redding, Austin; 12 grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, seven brothers and three sisters.

Visitation: One hour before the service Tuesday at the mortuary.

Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at the mortuary with the Rev. Richard Loomis officiating. Casket bearers will be David Gartner, Scott Gartner, Paul Gartner, John Gartner, Chris Gartner and Brian Tolzman.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.

Funeral Home: Clasen-Jordan Mortuary, Austin.

Memorials: To the Stacyville Cemetery Fund or to the donor's choice.
