Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 30, 1996 at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, for Halvor Leraaen, 100, of St. Ansgar. Rev. Stephen Engelstad and Rev. Robert Porisch officiated and burial was in the First Lutheran Cemetery. Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, was in charge of arrangements. He died July 27, 1996 at Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.

Halvor Leraaen was born May 21, 1896 in Uvdal, Norway the first child of Ole and Barbara Halvorson Leraaen. In 1901, at the age of five, he came to the U.S. with his parents and two younger siblings. The family settled near St. Ansgar and the father established a business of shoe repair.

Halvor attended Clyde school. He attended elementary grade school and then did farm work. He was confirmed at the First Lutheran Church, June 1912 by Rev. Waldeland.

In 1931 he went into partnership with his father and they added a harness repair business to the shoe repair business, later addded repair of grain binder canvas.

On November 11, 1945, he married Violet Warner, a native of Enderlin, North Dakota. They were the parents of two daughters.

Halvor retired in August of 1983, sold his shop building which is now "Home Sweet Home" speciality store.

After his retirement, he built a little shop and sharpened saws.

He was an active member of his church and a trusted businessman.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one sister; and four brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Violet; a daughter, June and husband, Rev. Paul Ulring; a daughter, Mary Kay and husband, William Mark both of Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

OBITUARY: Halvor Leraaen, 1896-1996

ST. ANSGAR, IOWA -- Halvor Leraaen, age 100, died Saturday, July 27, 1996, at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Stephen Engelstad and the Rev. Robert Porisch, officiating. Burial will be in First Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home.

Halvor Leraaen was born May 21, 1896 in Uvdal, Norway.

Survivors include his wife, Violet, of St. Ansgar; two daughters, June Ulring and Mary Kay Mark, both of Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, four brothers.
