Russel N. Shaw of Brainerd, Minnesota, died on January 30, 2011 at Essentia Health's--St. Joseph's Medical Center.
A memorial service officiated by Pastor David Holte will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Trinity Lutheran Church with a luncheon to follow the service in the Fellowship Hall. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post #255 Color Guard. Visitation will be 5-7 PM Friday at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd and continue the hour before services Saturday at the church.
He was born in Melrose, Minnesota on August 6, 1926 to Charles Russell Shaw and Emma Adelaide (Holmberg) Shaw. Russ attended schools in LaPorte and Park Rapids. He joined the U.S. Navy at age 17. Russel was very proud of serving his country from 1944-1947. After being honorably discharged, Russ started college at Brainerd Junior College and then transferred to Gustavus Adolphus where he completed his degree in Business Education.
He taught in Elkart, Orchard, and Mitchell, Iowa. While in Mitchell where he taught business and coached high school boys and girls basketball, he met and married Mary Alice Houghtaling on May 22, 1955. Russ and Mary moved to Brainerd in 1957 so that Russ could continue his teaching career at Pillager High School. Russ taught in Pillager for 30 years until his retirement in 1988.
Russ is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters, Kimberly (Jeff) Johnson, Kay Rineck, Karen (Dan) Wyman; son, Charles (Elizabeth) Shaw; grandchildren, Peter (Kara) Shaw, Ben Shaw, Jane Shaw, Katherine Johnson, Mary Alice Johnson, Madeline Maier; sister, Beverly (William) Fawcett; sister-in-law, Lois (Joseph) Mostek and many nieces and nephews.
During the summers between school years, Russ single handedly built a lake home on Pelican Lake where he and his family enjoyed many fun times together.
Russ was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion Post #255 and the Royal Order of the Brainerd Elks.
Russ was an animal lover, especially his dog Buddy. Memorials can be given to Brainerd Lakes H.A.R.T. in lieu of flowers.
