Bertha Olson was born in Norway, November 4, 1842, and slept peacefully away after a long illness at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Rev. C. P. Heltne, at Locust, Iowa, September 9, 1925, at the age of 82 years, 10 months and 5 days. She was baptized in the Aamot church December 26, 1842, by Rev. Hans Alsing and confirmed in the same church by the same pastor October 28, 1857.

She imigrated to America in 1869, arriving at the home of her sister, Mrs. T. Thompson, near Carpenter, Iowa, in the month of June of that year. Fourteen weeks were spent in crossing the Atlantic.

She was married January 1, 1874 to Ole Halvorson, who preceded her in death in 1899. This union was blessed with five children, the firstborn dying in infancy. The four who survive their mother are: Herman of Osage, Iowa; Mrs. Rev. C.P. Heltne of Locust, Iowa; Carl of Beach, North Dakota, and Ingvald of Osage, Iowa. She is also survived by four grandchildren. A brother and a sister, who imigrated to America shortly before she did, have both preceded her in death.

Mrs. Halvorson was a good Christian woman. She was of a very modest nature. Her demands were few. She was always ready to lend a helping hand wherever she could. During her vigorous days she was always found at the bedside of those who were sick. She loved the Lutheran church and was anxious to attend services whenever an opportunity presented itself. She read her devotional books dilligently and loved the beautiful hymns found in her hymn book.

A few days before she died she confidently said: "Soon I will enter into eternal bliss."

Short funeral services were held at the home of her daughter on Friday, September 12, conducted by Rev. Glesne of Decorah, Iowa, and at the St. Ansgar Lutheran church on Saturday, September 13, conducted by her former pastor, Rev. Waldeland.

Her remains were laid to rest in the Riverview cemetery.
