DIED--
GARDNER-On Friday, August 1, 1884, at the residence of his son, Charles F. Gardner, in Osage, NATHANIEL C. GARDNER.

The deceased was born in the town of Laurens, Otsego county, New York, December 29, 1805. He was married April 24, 1828, to Caroline Gregory who still survives him. Three children were born to them. One of them, a daughter, resides at Cummings, Kansas, and is the wife of Charles Brownell. Another child, George H., died four years ago from disease contracted in the army during the war. Charles F. Garnder, our popular nurseryman, was the youngest of the family.

The early life of the deceased was spent in Ostego county, N.Y. He resided five years in Wyoming county, near Castile, and was at one time a major in the military service of the state of New York. He emigrated to this state in 1857 and during the greater part of the time resided in Oakdale, Howard county. Here, while all the country was wild, open prairie, he set out on his farm one of the first groves planted in that region. This magnificent grove, containing not less than seventy-five varities of forest trees, and where are now to be seen giganitc evergreens rivaling in beauty those of New York, is still known all through that section as "Gardner's Grove".

Mr. Gardner's health began to fail about eight years ago, at which time he came to live with his son Charles of our town. For several months before his death he was confined to his bed by paralysis. During the latter part of his illness his gift of bearing also became affected, and for days or even weeks the only way he could communicate with the family was by means of a look or a nod.

He was for many years a member of the Congregational church, and also for a time a member of the Christian church, and died firm in the faith he had professed. He was always an affectionate husband and a fond father, and possessed in a high degree the affectionate regard of his family.

The funeral services were held at the house, Friday afternoon at four o'clock, and were attended by a large number of sympathizing friends.
