Lt. Robert Gardner
Killed in Italy May 2

Lt. Robert E. Gardner, 22-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Gardner of Oskaloosa, was killed in Italy May 2. The former Osage young man was fatally wounded accidentally, while completing a battle school problem, according to letters received by his parents.

He was buried with full military honors in an American cemetery in southern Italy. Services closed with the firing of three volleys by a firing squad and playing of "Taps" by the bugler.

"Bob" was graduated from the Osage High School in 1941. He attended Bloomfield Junior college before going to the University at Iowa City. He entered the service May 19, 1943.
