LAVERNE WALTERS

OSAGE - LaVerne Walters, 76, of Osage, died Wednesday (Jan. 30, 2002) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit in Osage.

LaVerne was born Feb. 23, 1925, in Sheffield, the son of Henry L. and Lena (Timmerman) Walters. He was raised in the Sheffield-Swaledale area and attended rural schools.

LaVerne was united in marriage to Zaneta Bean on Jan 7, 1949, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Nashua. They farmed near Little Cedar and then moved to Osage in 1969.

LaVerne started the Osage Sales Yard in 1965, selling new and used machinery. In later years he enjoyed collecting and restoring farm toys.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage, where he was a Deacon and Church Trustee.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Christian F. Gugel officiating. Cremation will follow services with a private family inurnment at a later date.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and one hour before services at the church.

He is survived by his wife, Zaneta Walters of Osage; three daughters, Shirley Shirley, of Charles City, Susanne Bolt and her husband, Garriett "Butch," of Parkersburg, and Sandra Heter and her husband, Alan, of Farmington, Minn.; two sons, Richard Walters and his wife, Ann, of Osage, and Robert Walters and his wife, Darla, of Spearfish, S.D.; two sisters, Irene Givens, of Waverly, and Betty Irish of Mount Sterling; two brothers, Roy Walters and his wife, Gene, of Osage, and Ray Walters and his wife, Nancy, of Mason City; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Ryan Walters; and a son-in-law, Michael Shirley.
