Mrs. Byron Leighton

Born March 31, 1840
Died March 16, 1913

Mary Frances Stone was born at Cape Elizabeth, Maine, on March 31, 1840, and passed away on March 16, 1913.

Mrs. Leighton's father was a pioneer minister of the Methodist Episcopal church, and under his preaching, at the age of sixteen, she united with the church and remained an active and consistent member to the time of her death. For the past forty years, she had been a member of the Osage Methodist church.

On September 16, 1860, she was united in marriage with Byron Leighton, her father, Rev. Hesse Stone, being the officiating clergyman. In the fall of 1869 Mr. and Mrs. Leighton came west and located west of Osage, which was their home until about a dozen years ago, when they removed to Osage.

Of the eight children born to Mr. and Mrs. Leighton, three sons and one daughter survive-Fred A. of Des Moines, William R. of Fairbury, Neb., Edwin A. of Waterloo, and Mrs. Lucy Mabel Cheney of North Bewick, Maine. One sister, Mrs. Lucy Kildee of this city, and the husband who has been her companion for more than fifty years also survive. Mrs. Leighton was a charter member of the local W. R. C. and always took an active interest in its work. For the past year she had been a patient sufferer, and it was with the hopes that an operation would bring her relief and possibly add several years to her life that she was taken to the Mayo Clinic at Rochester. The operation was successful, but complications set in and she passed peaceably away on the date above noted.

Mrs. Leighton was a devoted mother and affectionate wife, a neighborly neighbor and dearly beloved by all who knew her. The funeral was held from the Methodist Episcopal church, the service being in charge of the pastor, Rev. Frank W. Court. Interment was in the Osage cemetery.
