PIONEER OSAGE RESIDENT DIES
ROBERT GODFREY LAST OF
HIS PARENTS FAMILY

Osage, Iowa – Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Champions funeral home, for Robert J. Godfrey, 87, who died at his home Wednesday morning. He had been in failing health. In charge of the funeral will be the Rev. Glen Hartong, Methodist pastor. Burial will be in the family lot in Osage Cemetery.

Robert J. Godfrey was born March 16, 1857, son of Samuel and Matilda Godfrey, at Whitewater, Wisconsin. At the age of three years he came with his parents to Mitchell county, where he spent his boyhood.

October 5, 1882, he was married to Cora Welch, also of the Lincoln township territory, and they lived on the home farm. In 1899 they retired to Osage where Mr. Godfrey engaged in real estate business. About 20 years ago he retired from active work.

Surviving are his wife, Cora Welch Godfrey, two sons; Warren of Osage and Howard of Philadelphia, Pa.; one daughter, Mrs. Guy Pierce, Philadelphia; and five grandchildren.
Mr. Godfrey is the last member of the parental family. The 11 members of the family died in chronological order with the exception of his twin sister, Mrs. Dan Sherwin, who died about 30 years ago. All were long-lived. He was the youngest in the family.

A curious incident again occurred in the Godfrey home upon his death. The old walnut, family, 8-day clock stopped when he died. The clock also stopped at the death of his daughter-in-law, and at his mother’s death.
