Bessie M. Lorence James Gunther, 86, died Monday, November 1, 2010, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage. She had suffered from Parkinson’s for many years. Bessie was born to Anton and Anna (Mach) Lorence, immigrants of Czechoslovakia, in Mitchell, Iowa, on March 14, 1924.

She graduated from Mitchell High School. Bessie moved to Kansas City, Kansas, and married Walter James, with whom she had a daughter, Carol Rose. She was a bookkeeper for General Diaper Service and the Real Estate Board of Kansas City, Missouri. She later married George C. Gunther with whom she owned Gunther’s Bakery in North Kansas City, Missouri. They lived in Kansas City, Kansas, and McLouth, Kansas. Bessie moved to Osage to be closer to her daughter, Carol, in 2003, and entered Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care in 2006. She enjoyed cooking, baking, playing cards, puzzles and going to the casino.

Bessie is survived by her daughter, Carol R. Hamilton of Mitchell; sister-in-law, Darlene Lorence of Osage; step-daughters, Ann Brough of Kansas City, Kansas, Laurie Wilson of Overland Park, Kansas; step-sons, G. Thomas Gunther of North Kingston, Rhode Island, David Gunther of Florence, Kentucky; seven step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; many special friends; and her very special loving family at Osage Rehab.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1991; her parents; infant sister, Hedy; sister, Mary; and brothers, Joseph, Clement, Carl and Stanley.

A celebration of life open house will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 6, 2010, at Carol’s home, 600 East Van Buren, Mitchell, Iowa, the property on which Bessie was born. A graveside service will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Kansas City, Kansas, at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 7, 2010, where Bessie’s cremains will be laid to rest beside her husband as per her wishes.

A celebration of life open house will be held from 1 until 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6, at Carol's home, 600 East Van Buren, Mitchell, Iowa, the property on which Bessie was born.
A graveside service will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Kansas City, Kansas, at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7, where Bessie's cremains will be laid to rest beside her husband as per her wishes.
