The death of Mrs. Wirt Roe came as a shock to relatives and friends as she was ill only a little more than a week. Mrs. Roe was taken to a hospital at Iowa City when her condition became critical, and an operation was performed the evening of her arrival. However, she was in a weakened condition, and could not survive the shock. Her illness was caused from complications following an operation of two years ago, it is believed.
Effie Wheeler was born in Rock County, Wisconsin 58 years ago, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wheeler. The family moved to Round Grove, north of Riceville, when she was 4 years of age, and she grew to womanhood in that vicinity.
She attended the Riceville schools and also the Wessington Springs, S. D. seminary.
She was married to Wirt Roe at Riceville, February 14, 1894, and in 1911 they moved to Osage where they lived until 1916, when they moved to Billings, Montana. In 1922 they moved to Birmingham, Alabama.
Mrs. Roe came to Osage three years ago to care for her aged parents, and her husband, very ill from diabetes, went to White River, Wisconsin to be cared for by his relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. Roe were parents of three children: Vernon, of Birmingham, Alabama, who was unable to be present at the funeral; Mrs. Lillian Savidge, of Stroutsburg, Pennsylvania; and Walter, of Omaha. There are five grandchildren, all children of Vernon Roe.
Funeral services were held the Free Methodist Church at Riceville, in charge of the Reverend F. A. Court, and burial made in the Wheeler family lot.
