Diana Markels was born December 13, 1818, near Toronto, Canada, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Dykeman in Rudd Township, Floyd County, Iowa, August 16, 1903, at the age of eighty-four years, eight months and three days.
Sixty-three years ago she was married to William Hough and twelve years later they came to the United States. They lived in Illinois six years, and at Cedar Falls one year, and forty-four years ago they moved to Rudd Township where they lived the rest of their days. Mr. Hough died eleven years ago last February, making their married life fifty-two years in duration.
To this union were born nine children, Mrs. Martha Briggs, Mrs. Charlotte Dykeman, Mrs. Ellen Barrett and Mary, Jeremiah, John, Albert, William and Alonzo Hough, all of whom are living but Mary and John, and of those living, all but two are living not far from the old home where she spent thirty two years of her life. Twelve years ago she came to live with her daughter, Mrs. Dykeman, whose tender and untiring care made her last days as comfortable as possible.
Four years her health has not been good, but with the best of loving care she outlived the allotted years of man. She had more than twenty grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In early years she united with the Baptist church in Canada and has been a good mother, a faithful friend and a kind neighbor, beloved by all that knew her.
Funeral services conducted by Reverend Elurck, of Russ, were held at the house Tuesday, August 18, the text for the sermon being Isa. 66, 13, “As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you.” She was laid to rest beside her husband and child in the cemetery at Orchard.
