ITEM 2:

Rachel Goergen was born March 18, 1886 in New York and was an orphan train child who was adopted by Mathias and Elizabeth Goergen who lived near Bailey, Iowa. She had always celebrated her birthday on May 18 and she also used that date for other purposes such as for a marriage license, etc. The correct date was discovered in tracing family records and archives in March 1988, almost one hundred two years later.

She married Nicholas (Nick) Mueller on September 15, 1904, in Meyer, Iowa. After their marriage, Nick and Rachel lived on his father's farm and worked for his father. Later he was employed as a butcher in Stacyville, Iowa. Subsequently they moved to a small farm approvimately one and a half miles south of Meyer, Iowa. In 1912 they rented the large Mueller family farm from his father and in 1929 purchased it.

To this union were born seven sons and four daughters: Arnold, (b: 6-22-1905), Rosina, (b: 4-9-1907) (Mrs. Henry Durben), Esther, (b: 2-23-1909) (Mrs. Mike Hartogh), Agnes, (b: 10-17-1911) (Mrs. Howard Bees), Carl, (b: 1-18-1914, d: 8-6-1973), Francis (b: 4-17-1916, d: 10-4-1979), Raymond (b: 4-20-1918, d: 8-10-1976), Martha, (b: 7-8-1921) (Mrs. Henry Duebner), Paul (b: 3-3-1924), William (b: 3-14-1926), Reynold "Butch" (b: 11-1-1929).

At the time of their Golden Wedding Anniversary Nick and Rachel had twelve grandchildren and no great-grandchildren. As of this writing (September 1988) there have been born sixteen grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-granchildren.

They continued living in Riceville until Nick's death on Christmas Day 1967 and Rachel's on February 18, 1968.
