Dorothy Elaine Shoars Duenow, 92, of Jefferson City, died Thursday, February 5, 2009, at St. Mary's Health Center.
She was born June 12, 1916, in Osage, Iowa, the daughter of the late Smith Lester and Grace (Lewis) Shoars. On March 4, 1938, in Osage, Iowa, she married Wayne Herman Duenow, who survives at their home
Mrs. Duenow was a graduate of Mitchell High School and of Normal Training in Iowa. She taught for three years in one-room country schools in Mitchell County, Iowa. She was active in Extension Clubs in Iowa and Missouri. She also sang with the Mitchell County Iowa Women's Chorus for a number of years. The family moved to New Bloomfield, Missouri in 1956. Dorothy worked for Employment Security and the Capital City Water Company in Jefferson City.
In 1978, she retired from the Callaway County Assessor's Office in Fulton. After retiring, she and her husband traveled all over the United States and spent over 20 years as Winter Texans in Brownsville, Texas. She took up oil painting in her 60s and has painted many beautiful pictures for her friends and family.
Besides her husband of over 70 years, she is survived by five daughters, Sherry Repper and husband Tom of New Bloomfield, Constance Rumbaugh and husband Jeff of Moberly, Pamela Baxter of New Bloomfield, Debra Goldammer and husband Sam of Jefferson City, Jacquelyn Berry and husband of Doug of Jefferson City; five sons, Robert Duenow and wife Betty of Las Vegas, Nevada, David Duenow and wife Vickie of Trenton, Michael Duenow and wife Nancy of Fulton, Philip Duenow of Darlington, South Carolina, and James Duenow and wife Carol of Jefferson City; 27 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wilma Bohneman and Phyllis Dvorak, both of Waterloo, Iowa.
Dorothy was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother and three grandsons.
Friends will be received from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2009, at Faith Lutheran Church, where a memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Alvin Lange and Rev. David Mueller officiating. Private interment will be held in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Faith Lutheran Church Building Fund in Jefferson City or the St. Paul Lutheran Church Building Fund in Fulton.
