Funeral Set
at St. Ansgar

ST. ANSGAR, IOWA — Funeral services for Joe Cherney will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church.

He was born February 1, 1872, in this community. His parents were Vaclav and Theresa Cherney. He was married to Victorine McCullough**, who died nine years ago.

Four weeks ago he became ill and was taken to Mercy Hospital in Mason City where he submitted to major surgery. He died there Wednesday morning.

Survivors are 19 nieces and nephews.

He served as justice of the peace for St. Ansgar for many years, which position he held at the time of his death.

Burial in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Joseph Cherney attended St. Ansgar Seminary being married to Victorine McCulla December 26, 1900. Victorine taught country school and taught country school and taught at the St. Ansgar school for years. They lived on the home farm until 1914 when they moved to St. Ansgar. The property being Lot 1 and 2 block 62 on which Joe kept up a beautiful rock garden on the south side of the house.

Victoria died in May 1946 and Joe died in 1955.

For years when Joe was still on the farm he did a great deal of the threshing that was done in the area for he had his own threshing machine. Later, he served many years as a Justice of the Peace and performed many marriages during that time.
