Roman A. Hemann is the second son John N. and Mary Barbara (Gerber) Hemann of Stacyville, Iowa. He was born on the home farm on January 29, 1921, and attended Visitation School. He was married in November 14, 1949, to Dorothy Bartleman, daughter of LeRoy and Margaret (Evans) Bartleman, and they have six sons, Dennis, Thomas, Michael, Patrick, Paul and David.
Roman enlisted in the U. S. Army Signal Corps in October, 1942, and attended Hadley Tack in St. Louis for four months of schooling. Basic training was at Camp Kohler, California, and following that he spent six months at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, in communication training. Nine months were spent on maneuvers in Tennessee. He was sent to the European theatre of war with the 135th Signal Radio Intelligence Co., and was discharged in April 1946.
After returning to the states he joined the Minnesota National Guard at Owatonna, Minnesota and later transferred to Rochester. Minnesota. The Minnesota National Guard was called to active duty during the Korean conflict in January, 1951. He began duty at Camp Rucker, Alabama, and spent eight months at Fort Benning, George taking further schooling. During the following months he was Commanding Officer of Co. G. of the 135th Infantry Regiment and Commanding Officer of Headquarters Co., 1st Battalion, 135th Infantry Regiment in Camp Rucker until his discharge on December 21, 1952.
He lived in Fort Dodge, Iowa where he was a salesperson and a contractor.
