Nicholas Hemann

Nicholas Hemann was born September 15, 1823 in Hirten, Mayen, Germany; the son of John Peter Hemann and Katharina (Bauer) Hemann. He first settled in Johnsburg, Illinois.

On October 15, 1849 he married Anna Maria “Mary” Freund in Johnsburg, McHenry, Illinois, the daughter of John Freund and Margaretha (Halfman) Freund.

In 1855 the Nicholas Hemann family purchased land from the U.S. government through its land office in Dubuque, Iowa. Traveling to Iowa in a horse drawn wagon Nicholas and Mary and their three oldest children, arrived at the homestead on May 31, 1855 and set to work the following day plowing the first furrow. Land records in the Mitchell County Courthouse confirm the purchase of 160 acres at $1.25 per acre for a total of $200. Later the farm was expanded to 344 acres. Their first home was a log cabin but it was replaced by a house two years later. after a sawmill was established in Stacyville.

Nicholas’s parents, who remained in Johnsburg, Illinois passed away in Johnsburg; his father in 1871 and his mother in 1883. Nicholas wife passed away May 11, 1881.

Nicholas Hemann died May 19, 1898 in Stacyville, Mitchell Iowa.

Surviving him were seven children: Mrs. Mathias (Maria) Krebsbach; Mrs. Henry (Anna) May; Mrs. Bernard (Margaret) May; Mrs. Joseph (Christina) Buhr; Mathias Hemann; Mrs. Peter (Gertrude) Weber; Mrs. Joseph (Rosa Mary) Durben; two brothers Joseph and Theodore and a sister, Mrs. Castor (Anna) Adams.
