RICEVILLE, IOWA - Viola Lydia Hansen, 94, of Riceville, passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2010, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City, following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 2, at the Riceville United Methodist Church in Riceville, with the Rev. Pam Kranzler, officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville, and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.

Viola was born on July 4, 1916, in Emmett County to Hiram and Rosa Griese. She married Walt Hansen on October 6, 1935, in Dolliver, Iowa. To this union nine children were born: Kenny (Helen) of Hood River Oregon, Gloria (Gene) Russell, of Janesville, Ann Myers, of Winthrop, Patty (Brian) Crouch, of Independence, Harlan (Mary Lou), of Goodland, Minnesota, Roger (Diane), of Dolan Springs, Arizona, Sue (Joe) Keeling, of Riceville, Jean (Durwin) Bakken, of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, and Ray (Mary), of Rochester, Minnesota.

Viola and Walt moved to the Riceville area in 1939. Viola devoted her life to her family. She also worked in the community as a personal care giver and at the Riceville schools as a janitor and lunch room server. After retiring at the age of 70 she enjoyed attending congregate meals, playing cards and spending time with family and friends.

Viola is preceded in death by her husband, Walt (1969); two brothers, four sisters, two sons-in-laws,and two grandchildren.

She is survived by her nine children, 33 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren, and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
