FRANK CHATMAN
DIES SUDDENLY AT
DAUGHTERS HOME

Frank Chatman, 79, who had spent his entire life in Floyd and Mitchell counties, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Roy Richards, Saturday evening.

Frank Chatman, the son of Moses and Rachel Strong Chatman, was born June 23, 1864, in Floyd county, near Orchard, Iowa. He was the youngest in a family of nine children. He passed away May 22, 1943, at 11:25 p.m. He had made his home with Mrs. Richards since the death of his wife in 1936.

He grew up in the community where he was born and attended the public schools. On December 30, 1891, he was married to Maggie Hill. They established their home on a farm a mile east and a half mile south of Orchard where they lived for some years. They then moved to the present home where he passed away. One daughter was born to this union, who survives him.

In 1910 they retired from farming and moved to Osage, purchasing a house on East State street, where they lived until his wife passed away in April 1936. Then he returned to the farm where his son-in-law and daughter had moved.

In recent months his health has been declining. However, he had been able to be up a part of the time every day. Death came rather suddenly Saturday evening.

He united with the Osage Congregational church on April 20, 1924, and had been a faithful and devoted member. For many years he served on the board of deacons, and at the time of his death he was an honorary deacon.

He lived a quiet, unassuming life, winning the respect of everyone. He had a great many friends throughout the community and they were loyal to him, especially during recent months, remembering to visit him in his home. For some time he had been cared for by Robert Falteishek of Riceville.

He is survived by his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Richards; two brothers, Henry Chatman of near Osage, and Alfred Chatman of Duluth, Minnesota, besides a large number of nephews and nieces, living here and elsewhere and a large number of friends.

Funeral services were held at the Champion Funeral Home last Tuesday, conducted by his pastor, the Rev. Stiles Lessly, with burial in Osage cemetery.
