Matt Schaefer Rites to Be Held Thursday

Stacyville, Iowa – Funeral services will be held Thursday for Matt Schaefer, 48, farmer near Meyer, who took his own life by hanging in the corn crib at his home Monday morning.

The Rev. Father Goetzinger will officiate at the Sacred Heart church at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be at the Stacyville cemetery. He is survived by his wife and five children.

COMMITS SUICIDE
AT FARM HOME

Matt Schaefer, 53 [SIC], farmer living near Meyer, ended his life Monday morning, August 23. His lifeless body was found in the forenoon, hanging in a corn crib.

Dr. G. E. Krepelka, county coroner, was called, and gave a verdict of suicide. In his report Dr. Krepelka stated that Mr. Schaefer had suffered form Melancholia for the past five years. He has been at St. Joseph's sanitarium at Dubuque several times for treatment, and was there from June 12 to June 24 of this year. The attacks were coming frequently and his family had tried to keep a careful watch on his movements.

Mr. Schaefer held the respect of his whole community. he was an excellent farmer, and owned a farm of 237 acres. He had invested a considerable sum in war bonds; in fact, he was unusually successful in his financial endeavors.

He was born in the neighborhood where he died, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Schaefer. His marriage to Belle Blake took place November 19, 1920.

His widow and their five children, as follows, survive: Amos, 20; Avery, 17; Mary Alyce, 16; Robert, 12 and Raymond, 10. Surviving also are his brothers, Frank and John, of Meyer; two sisters, Mrs. Albert Blake of Meyer, and Mrs. Aloys Hemann, of Stacyville.

Funeral services were held this morning, Thursday, at 9:30 o'clock, at the Sacred Heart church at Meyer, with Rev. Father Goetzinger officiating. Burial was made in the Meyer cemetery.
