OSAGE, IOWA — Margaret Violetta (Riley) Ramsay, 100, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Osage, with the Rev. Philip Recker officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with a rosary beginning at 3:30 p.m. and a scripture service at 7:30 p.m.
Margaret was born October 6, 1898, on the family farm in Howard County, near Elma, the daughter of Nicholas and Margaret (Buckley) Riley. Her early education was in the community schools.
She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls where she graduated from a special rural teachers course. She began her teaching career at the Mt. Pleasant rural school in East Lincoln Township, Mitchell County. Later she returned to school and received her bachelor of arts degree from Upper Iowa University, Fayette.
In 1923 she was united in marriage to Clarence A. Ramsay of Otranto. They were married in St. Patrick's Catholic Church at St. Cecelia, near Elma. To this union were born three children, Marie, who died in infancy, and Paul and Joseph, who also preceded her in death.
She returned to teaching and taught in Carpenter, St. Ansgar and Riceville. She held life memberships in the Iowa State Education Association and in the American Legion Auxiliary. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Sacred Heart Guild, and helped organize The Volunteer Group.
Margaret is survived by two sisters-in-law, Florence Ramsay Smith, West Branch, and Deola Ramsay Wryn, Glendale, Calif., and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence; an infant daughter, Marie; and two sons, Paul and Joseph.
