resident deceasedFuneral rites for Sister Mary Bernardine Salz, 82, of Sacred Heart Covenant in Cedar Rapids, were held Thursday at the Convent Chapel. Sister Bernardine died at a Cedar Rapids hospital March 11, 1980.
Bernardine Salz was born in Lenore, Illinois, January 1, 1898, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Roth Salz. She made her final vows as a sister of Mercy June 21, 1936, after receiving her early education at the Catholic school in Stacyville.
She was a high school teacher for 40 years in Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and DeWitt. She received her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Iowa, completing additional study at Mount Mercy College, Loras College and the University of Northern Iowa, retiring to the Convent in 1969.
Surviving are six sisters, Mrs. Isidor Weber of Osage, Mrs. Mary Derner of St. Peter, Minnesota, Mrs. Lena Purtell of Dubuque, and Mrs. William Hynes and Mrs. Delphin Brumm of New Hampton and Matilda Salz of Bellevue; nieces and nephews.
