OBITUARY: Halvor J. Halvorson, 1851-1938

Halvor J. Halvorson was born at Grau, Hadeland, Norway on July 3, 1851. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church of his native land. In October 1874 he was united in marriage to Ragnild Horgen, who survives him.

During his time in Norway, he worked for some time at a sawmill and as a mason. In June 1882 he came to America and located in Cedar Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, where he established a home in which he lived until his death. Since coming to this country, besides attending to his farm work he spent a great deal of time at mason work.

Of the four children born to his wedlock, the following survive him: Iver, Peter, and Henry, all of this community.

Since coming to Cedar Township, Mr. Halvorson had always been an active member of the Rock Creek Lutheran Church. He had always enjoyed good health until about two months ago. About nine years ago he became totally blind and was obliged to spend his days at home. He passed away on May 22, 1938.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. O.C. Myhre at Rock Creek Lutheran Church on May 25, 1938. Interment was in the Rock Creek cemetery.

Halvor Iversen Dammen Halvorson was born July 3, 1851 at Gran, Hadeland, Norway to Ivers Dammen and Siri Hansdatter, the oldest of their six children.

His siblings were: Ingeborg (1852-1929), Hans (1855-1931), Martha (1858, married Simon Engebretsen, died 1924), Johanna (1861, married Carl Johan Odden, died 1938) and Bertha (1862, married Anton Larsen Ask, died 1931).

Halvor married Ragnild Horgen on September 5, 1876 at Gran, Hadeland, Norway. The couple had 3 children while living at Gran, Hadeland, Norway: Iver (born October 3, 1875 at Horgeneiet, married Alice Dorothea Huset, died February 12, 1947 Mitchell, Iowa); Peter (born March 31, 1879 Framstadeiet in Gran, died February 27, 1969 Floyd, Iowa); Sophie Marie (born February 6, 1881, died 1882 on board ship while crossing the Atlantic Ocean).

Halvor and Ragnild and their three children left Gran, Hadeland, Norway May 17, 1882 to emigrate to Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa. Their baby daughter, Sophie died enroute. They had a fourth child, son, Henry Halvorson (born January 11, 1888, died February 7, 1960 both in Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa).

The family settled on a farm in Cedar township.

Halvor became a naturalized citizen on September 29, 1891. The family used various surnames over the years - Halvorsen/Halvorson, Dammen and Iversen or Ivarsdatter.

Halvor died May 22, 1938 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa and was buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.
