Sigrid (Fosholdt) Norby 1862-1940

Mrs. Sigrid Norby, wife of the deceased Olaus Norby, was born at Bragerdokken, Hedalen, Valdres, Norway, December 30,1862. She was the oldest child of Syver Johnson and Marthe Marie Lunde Fosholdt. She came with her parents and brother John to Wisconsin in 1867.

In the latter part of that year, they lived in a lumber camp in Manistee, Michigan, where her brother John died. The family came to Mitchell County, Iowa in 1868, temporarily locating at the Thideman Docken home in the Rock Creek community. While residing there, her mother died giving birth to her sister, Marthe Marie.

They later located to the Fosholdt homestead in Floyd County, Iowa, after her father’s marriage to Johanne Grov in 1874.

She was baptized in the Lutheran church at Hedalen, Norway and confirmed in the Rock Creek Lutheran church, Mitchell County of which she has since been an active member.

On July 1, 1887, she was married to Olaus Norby, of the Rock Creek community. Immediately following their marriage, they located on their farm in Rock Grove Township, Floyd County. On this place she continued to live until moving to Osage in 1919. In their wedlock three children were born: Sigurd, Mrs. Joseph (Martha) Hagen, and Tillman.

Her husband preceded her in death on August 10, 1934, and her son, Sigurd Harloff, on November 1, 1924.

The following near relatives survive: four brothers: Harold, John, and Thorvald, of this community, and Gabriel of Long Beach, CA. Also four sisters; Mrs. O.C. (Marthe) Christianson and Mrs. Iver (Mary) Nelson of this vicinity, and Isabelle and Elizabeth of Long Beach, CA. Eight grandchildren also survive.

Mrs. Norby had been in failing health for many years, but confined to her bed only the last four weeks. She died at her home in Osage, March 26, 1940, the cause of death being the infirmities of old age.

Funeral services were conducted by the pastor, the Rev. O.C. Myhre, from the Norby home at 1:00, and from the Rock Creek Lutheran church at 2:00 p.m. on March 29. Interment was in the Rock Creek cemetery.
