Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon for a retired Osage school instructor, Herman Halvorson, 83, who died Saturday, April 2, 1960 at University hospitals in Iowa City. Mr. Halvorson had undergone surgery earlier the same week. He was confined to Mitchell County Memorial hospital before going to Iowa City.
The Rev. Obert Hoven was assisted at the service by the Rev. Walter Gigstad at Our Savior's Lutheran church. Burial was at First Lutheran cemetery in St. Ansgar, Iowa. C.R. Champion and Sons were in charge of arrangements.
Herman Halvorson was born February 7, 1877 near St. Ansgar, the oldest of four children of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Halvorson. He was baptized and confirmed in First Lutheran church in St. Ansgar by the Rev. Johann Olsen. He received his formal education at the public school, St. Ansgar seminary, Valders Business college in Decorah, and North Dakota university at Grand Forks.
Mr. Halvorson taught school at the Grand Forks college from 1902 to 1906, and at the St. Ansgar seminary from 1906 to 1910.
August 18, 1913, Mr. Halvorson and Clara G. Hanson were married in Minneapolis. He was at that time employed as assistant cashier in the Peoples State Bank of Thief River Falls, Minn., where they lived until 1916.
In 1918 Mr. Halvorson accepted a position as manual training teacher at Osage high school. He continued in that position for 19 years. In 1937 he accepted employment as a cabinet maker in Des Moines, later at Spokane, Washington, and finally in Waterloo. He retired in 1952 when he and Mrs. Halvorson moved back to Osage.
Mr. Halvorson was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran church when they resided in Osage. He taught a Bible class, and was superintendent of the Sunday school from 1919 until 1937.

He died Saturday evening at the University Hospital, Iowa City, where he had major surgery Wednesday. The Rev. Obert Hoven will be in charge, with burial in the St. Ansgar Cemetery. Champion Funeral Home in charge.
Born to Ole and Berta Halverson, February 7, 1877, near St. Ansgar, he attended the St. Ansgar Seminary and Valder's Business College, in Decorah. He taught at the St. Ansgar Seminary, at a church school at Grand Forks, North Dakota, and was employed in a bank at Thief River Falls, Minnesota. He was a manual training instructor in Osage for 19 years.
His wife, the former Clara Hansen, to whom he was married in 1913, and a brother, Ingvald, of Osage, survive.
