HOUGHTALING, HINKSON, SEVERSON, MOSTEK, SHAW

Funeral services for Arthur Houghtaling, 69, of Mitchell, who passed away Sunday morning, June 28, 1964, at the Mitchell County Memorial hospital, were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Faith Lutheran church in Mitchell with the Rev. William Kamke officiating.

Burial was in the First Lutheran cemetery at St. Ansgar. Military rites at the graveside were conducted by the Walter T. Enneberg Post 358 of the American Legion of St. Ansgar.

Mr. Houghtaling had been ill for two months and had undergone surgery twice.

He was born November 27, 1894, near Grimes, the son of Willie Wilbur and Gertrude Hinkson Houghtaling, and spent his early years there attending the district school and high school. Later he was a student at Leander Clark college, Toledo.

Mr. Houghtaling was married October 6, 1920, to Bella J. Severson of near Carpenter. The first 10 years of their married life was spent on a farm near Mildred, Minn. Later they moved to Iowa and farmed near Mason City.

In 1939 the couple moved to Mitchell and Mr. Houghtaling was engaged in painting and carpenter work.

Mr. Houghtaling served several years as mayor of West Mitchell and at the time of his death was a member of the Mitchell town council.

He was a member of the Walter T. Enneberg Post 358 of the American Legion at St. Ansgar for more than 20 years and was a member of the Veterans of WWI, Barracks 1391, Osage, serving as commander, adjutant and quartermaster.

He was a member of the Faith Lutheran church at Mitchell and had been active in the building and remodeling project of the church which was recently completed.

Mr. Houghtaling is survived by: his wife, Bella; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Helen) Mostek of Mitchell and Mrs. Russel (Mary) Shaw of Brainard, Minn; 11 grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Daisy Guthrie of Woodward, Mrs. Bertha Greenley, Colorado, Mrs. William Hill of Knoxville and Mrs. Helen Ringrose of Riverside, California, and one brother, Frank of Greeley, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one brother.
