Bergit Nilsdatter Kallerud, familiarly known as Old Grandma Gilbertson, was born September 4, 1813, at Vegli, Nummedal, Norway. She immigrated to America in 1839, settled in Jefferson Prairie, Rock Co., Wisconsin. She was married to Jens Gilbertson in 1840. In 1861 they removed to St. Ansgar, Iowa, where they have since made their home. This marriage was blessed with two children.

Her husband died December 29, 1896. Mrs. Gilbertson's health began to fail about four years ago. Shortly after this time she suffered a slight stroke of apoplexy, she rallied but has since been of very feeble health. Lately she also suffered from heart trouble. She had several spells shortly before her death. During all this time she received the most tender care, her son's family doing for her everything in their power.

However her health failed continually and she died January 12, 1907. The funeral was conducted at the U.N.L. church on January 12, Rev. Waldeland officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in the U.N.L. church cemetery.
