A Sad Suicide
Mrs. Maggie Munholland committed suicide by taking poison, last Thursday afternoon, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Pint in First ward. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Crawford, living near Otranto.
In 1894 at the age of 15 she as married to Wm. Munholland of this city. Two children were born to them, one dying in infancy, the other, a bright little girl of three years, survives her.
Mr. and Mrs. Munholland had not lived together for some time, and the wife had made application for divorce, which would have come up in the coming term of court. For some weeks she had been staying in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Pint, and honestly endeavoring to secure employment. Not being successful in this, and having been made the victim of those who are never so happy as when engaged in gossip and slander, she became disheartened and took her own life. She took a large dose of strychnine, which had previously been concealed in the clock.
As soon as Mrs. Pint discovered what she had done, Doctors, Whitley and Gable were summoned, who did all in their power to save the woman, but the poison had become so innoculated, into the system that they could do nothing. Before dying she regretted her rash act and implored the doctors to save her.
The funeral was held on Saturday, Rev. Smith officiating. The little girl will be given a home by her mother's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Crawford.
