Last Rites Held for Local Pioneer, Adolph S. Groth

Funeral services with military rites for Adolph S. Groth, 65, who died Tuesday, December 9, 1952, at his home north of St. Ansgar, were held Friday, December 12, 1952, at the First Lutheran church with the Rev. O.A. Langehough officiating.

Adolph Sigurd Groth was born January 5, 1887, the eldest son of Jacob and Cecelia Halstenson Groth, at the old Groth homestead north of St. Ansgar. He was baptized February 6, 1887, by Pastor Johan Olsen and was confirmed on June 9, 1901, by Pastor Olsen.

Mr. Groth received his early education at the Clyde school and later attended the St. Ansgar Seminary. He helped his father on the home farm until April, 1918, when he was called into the service of his country during World War I. He served overseas with the 90th Division. On the day he landed in New York from overseas duty, his mother passed away.

On June 11, 1930, he was united in marriage with the former Carrie Tollefson. Two children were born to this union. Mrs. Adolph Groth died October 8, 1949. He was also preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include a son, Gaylord, at home; a daughter, Kathryn, a student at Luther college in Decorah; also two sisters, Clara and Alma, of St. Ansgar; two brothers, Joseph, of Austin, Minnesot, William of St. Ansgar; and many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Groth was a kind and conscientious father and a good neighbor. He was always interested in community affairs. He was a lifelong member of the First Lutheran church in St. Ansgar and was a charter member of the Walter T. Enneberg Post No. 358, American Legion.

Burial was in the First Lutheran cemetery with Rev. Langehough in charge of the committal services.

Military rites were in charge of members of the Walter T. Enneberg Post No. 358, American Legion. Casket bearers included the following neighbors; Arnold Troge, Luther Tollefson, Rudolph Nitardy, Anton Pike, Lawrence Boening and Miles Warrington.

Relatives and friends from out of town who attended the services included; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Thompson of Faribault, Minnesota; Mrs. Ruth Hyman of Aberdeen, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph C. Groth and Janet of Austin; Norris and Ennert Groth, both of Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hahn and Harlan, Miss Clara Johnson, Mrs. Olive Howe, Mrs. Lewis Haberkorn and Mrs. Josephine Schmidt, all of Osage; and Mrs. Emma Groth and Mr. and Mrs. P.E. Highum of Kasson, Minnesota.
