ANTON CONRAD GROTH

Anton Conrad Groth was born on July 9, 1878 at St. Ansgar, Mitchell county, Iowa, the son of Assor Halstenson Groth and Kirsti Jacobsdatter Aslesen Groth. Anton died on March 17, 1960 at Osage, Iowa. Burial was in the First Lutheran Church cemetery at St. Ansgar.

On February 17, 1904 Conrad was married to Ida Bertine Gunderson, the daughter of John E. Tormoen Gunderson and Barbro Sagabraaten Knudsdatter Gunderson. Conrad and Ida were the parents of seven children: Assor Conrad, Albin Irving, Albin James, Gerhard, Norris Selvin, Ardella Ilene (Mrs. Clifford Warrington) and Claire Holland Groth.

Anton attended the common schools and supplemented his early education with four years' study in the St. Ansgar Seminary, and graduated on the 11th of June, 1897. He then engaged in truck gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons: Albin Irving Groth was born and died in 1908, and Gerhard Gunderson Groth was born and died in 1912.

He is survived by his wife, Ida, and by four sons and a daughter.

Funeral services for Anton C. Groth, 81, retired mail carrier, who died at the Mitchell County Memorial hospital in Osage Thursday, March 17, 1960, were held Monday, March 21, 1960 at the First Lutheran church with the Rev. Don R. Hamilton officiating.

Anton C. Groth, the youngest child of Assor and Kjersti Groth, was born July 9, 1878 at the Groth homestead north of St. Ansgar. He was baptized and confirmed by the Rev. Johan Olsen at the First Lutheran church here, and was a lifelong member of this church. Mr. Groth received his early education at Clyde school north of St. Ansgar. He was graduated from St. Ansgar Seminary, and also attended the University of Minnesota.

On February 17, 1904 he was united in marriage with Ida B. Gunderson who survives him. Their home was blessed with seven children, five of whom survive; Conrad of St. Ansgar, Albin of Thiensville, Wisconsin, Norris and Claire of Minneapolis and Ardella (Mrs. Clifford Warrington) St. Ansgar. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 12 brothers and sisters and two sons who died in infancy.

Mr. Groth was a lifelong resident of this community. He was engaged in farming until 1911 after which he operated a cream route for several years. In 1919 he began service as an RFD mail carrier and served the surrounding community until his retirement in 1944. In this period he received a citation from the Postmaster General of the United States for his faithful service in doing his utmost to serve his patrons.

He was very active and interested in the work of his church and community. He was active in the plans for the St. Ansgar Centennial, and was well known for his interest in maintaining Groth Family History which dated back 410 years. Copies of his family history have been requested by many colleges and universities. Mr. and Mrs. Groth had the privilege of observing their golden wedding anniversary February 17, 1954. His health began to fail in 1958.

Burial was in the First Lutheran cemetery with Rev. Hamilton in charge of the committal services.

Casket bearers were John Grace, Charles McKibben, Galen Graves, Ren Anderson, Albert Petersen and Amil Fisher. Honorary bearers were Charles Culbertson, I.E. Parr, William Wolf, N.E. Lorenzen, Oscar Johnson and Leo Bathen.
