OSAGE, IOWA - Melvin George Emil Hackbart, age 91, of Osage, died Sunday (March 7, 2010) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2010, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Inurnment will be at the Osage Cemetery with military honors at the gravesite by Osage American Legion Post 278.
Visitation with the body present for viewing will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.Melvin was born on Aug. 20, 1918 in Osage, the son of Edward and Wilhemina "Minnie" (Tabbert) Hackbart. He attended Osage schools through the tenth grade and then began doing farm work.
Melvin joined the U.S. Army in August of 1942 and was stationed in Arkansas where he was an MP for the POWs held there, and also hauled munitions from the factory to the Air Force base in Stuttgart, Ark. While he was stationed in Arkansas, he met Emma Virginia Horton of Pine Bluff. They were married June 30, 1943. After his honorable discharge, they moved back to the Osage area where he was employed by Tyrholm Implement, Osage Schools, and Lampert's Lumber Yard. Melvin was a lifelong member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage and was a member of the Osage American Legion. He was an avid Osage Green Devils fan, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family.
Melvin is survived by two daughters, Bev DeWalle of Charles City, and Pat (Kaye) Betts of Mason City; one son, Charlie (Glenda) Hackbart of Ackley; nine grandchildren, Don DeWalle, Jr., Mark DeWalle, Dawn (Richard) Flugge, Darin (Nikki) DeWalle, Bob Betts, Tonya Hickman, Tim Hackbart, Kristina Hackbart, and Danielle Hackbart; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia, in 1990; three brothers, Oscar, Ray, and Roy; one sister, Elfrieda Beyer; one son-in-law, Donald DeWalle, Sr.; and one granddaughter-in-law, Blenn Betts.
