James Jacob Hartogh 1920-2002

BORN IN STACYVILLE

CHARLES CITY, IOWA - James Hartogh, 81, a former resident of South Cedar Terrace, Charles City, died Tuesday (Oct. 15, 2002) at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for James Hartogh will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City with Monsignor Stanley Hayek officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. There will be a flag presentation at the graveside by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. conducted by the St. Francis Circle and where there will be a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

James Jacob Hartogh was born Dec. 28, 1920, at Stacyville, the son of Bernard and Hattie (Siebert) Hartogh. He graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Rock Island, Illinois.

James served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946 in the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign. While serving in the National Guard, he was called to active duty during the Korean War.

On December 30, 1943, he was united in marriage to Katherine Schmalen at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City.

During his working career, he was employed at Hy-Vee, Salsbury Laboratories, Trobridges and Judy's Bakery.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and was a former member of the VFW.

Living family members include his wife, Katherine, of Charles City; a son and his wife, Dennis and Diane Hartogh, of Storm Lake; two daughters and their husbands, Karla and Mike Ebert of Fairmont, Minnesota, and Michele and Joe Troutman of Ruckersville, Virginia; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Doyle and husband, Roy, of Hillsdale, Illinois, and Helen Carey, of Rock Island, Illinois; and a sister-in-law, Lorraine Hartogh of Stockton, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David; a granddaughter, Jessica Ebert, and three brothers.

Hauser Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
