OBITUARY: Lloyd Emil Kogle, 1916-2003

A memorial service for Lloyd Emil Kogle was held Saturday, July 12, 2003 at 10:00 am at Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Burial of his ashes will be at his hometown Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar. Memorials can be sent to a Lutheran Church of your choice.

Lloyd Emil Kogle died peacefully on July 7, 2003 after 87 years of smiles and laughs with his family, friends, and faith. He died from pneumonia at Good Samaritan Hospital after residing in Puyallup, Washington for the last six years.

He was born a triplet in Mason City, Iowa, on April 24, 1916. He grew up and graduated high school in St. Ansgar, Iowa. On June 15, 1941 he married Ruth Hilda Meister who proceeded him in death on March 2, 1998.

During World War II, Staff Sergeant Kogle served as a mess sergeant in the Persian Gulf Command and the Rhineland Campaign. Lloyd resided in Gladbrook, Iowa for 48 years where he and his wife were owners and operators of the Uptown Theater through the 1950's. From 1953 to 1976 he was a U.S. Department of Agriculture Meat Inspector with assignments in Sioux City, Waterloo, Marshalltown, and Tama, Iowa.

In August 1982, he was crowned the Cookout King at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines for his entry of "Grandpa Lloyd's Smoked Country Chicken."

He was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Puyallup, a charter member and founder of Christ Lutheran Church in Gladbrook, a member of the American Legion, and a member of the World War II Persian Gulf Veterans Organization.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William Henry and Minnie Kogle; half brother Albert Kogle; brother John Kogle; sister Evelyn Moeller; and triplets Grace Adrian and infant sister.

A son, Mark L. Kogle and his wife Marty, of Puyallup; their children Heather, Amanda and her husband Sean Cash, and Matthew; and a daughter, Marcia Dee Kogle of Denver, Colorado, survive him.
