Funeral services for Colbert J. Colbertson were held at the First Lutheran church in St. Ansgar on Wednesday afternoon. The Rev. Olaf A. Langehough was in charge of the obsequies. Burial was in the First Lutheran cemetery.
Colbert Julius Colbertson, son of Ole and Meta Colbertson was born on October 11, 1863 in Dodge County near Rochester, Minnesota. His parents came with the Clausen colony which settled in southern Minnesota.
Colbert's mother died when he was only two years old. The Endre Olson family, who lived near St. Ansgar, Iowa, cared for him for several years. Later he made his home with the Peter Amundson Golbergs who then resided just north of St. Ansgar.
He was confirmed by the Rev. J. Olsen on September 29, 1878.
During his early manhood he worked on various farms in this community and later he traveled quite extensively in the northwestern states.
In the late nineties he was associated with William Asher in the hardware business at St. Ansgar. After selling his store here, he bought an interest in a hardware store with Henry Dahl at Lyle, Minnesota, where he was in business for a number of years.
In the year of 1911 he purchased a farm south of St. Ansgar which he operated until 1933. His siter, Bertha Colbertson, maintained a home for him until her death in April, 1920.
The years of 1934 and 1935 he spent in North Dakota looking after his farming interest. After coming back to St. Ansgar, he purchased the Lovestrom residence where he lived until the time of his death.
His health had been failing for the past several months, and he was taken to the Cedar Valley Hospital at Charles City, Iowa on October 2, 1947, where he died Saturday evening, October 4 at the age of 83 years, 11 months and 23 days.
Colbert's friends and business associates found him to be an honest, upright man and he was ever ready to help in the community where he lived.
He was the last of his family and left no immediate relatives. Surviving are several nieces and nephews living in Canada and northern Minnesota, cousins residing in St. James and Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, and other relatives living in this locality.
Out of town relatives who attended the services were Mrs. Otto Wenstrom, St. James, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Njes, Oakland, Minn.; Mrs. L. O. Hanson, Austin, Minn.; Mrs. Eric Naatz, Austin; Mr. and Mrs. George Colbertson of Albert Lea, Minn.; Nick Severson of Lyle; Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Culbertson, Mrs. Carrie Culbertson and A.O. Severson of Carpenter.
