RICEVILLE - Betty Kozak, 77, of Riceville, died Thursday (Oct. 5, 2000) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Betty Jane Kozak was born July 14, 1923, in Burr Oak Township in Mitchell County, the daughter of James A. and Lola (Fehr) Gunsallus. She graduated from Osage High School in 1940.

On March 22, 1943, she was united in marriage to John Theodore Kozak at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They renewed their vows on March 24, 1956 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Haven.

Betty and John lived most of their married lives engaged in farming in the Riceville area. Betty and John enjoyed 57 years of marriage. To this union 10 children were born and raised. Betty enjoyed her family and helping others. She enjoyed playing cards, fishing, sewing and visiting with friends and family.

Left to cherish her family are her husband, John; daughters, M. Ann Aulwes-Allison and her husband, Bob, of Ottumwa, Lura and her husband, Dan Hockens Sr., of McIntire, and Ellen and her husband, Wes Novak, of Conrad; sons, Richard and his wife, Lynne, of Riceville, Ron and his wife, Marcia, of Mason City, Roger, of Farmington, Robert and his wife, Cheryl, of Sun Prairie, Wis., Russell and his wife, Marianne, of New London, and Rex and his wife, Bonnie, of Granville; 23 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bob and his wife, Lucile Gunsallus, of Osage, Dean Gunsallus, of Stacyville and Jimmy and his wife, Phyllis Gunsallus, of Osage; four sisters, Evelyn and her husband, Bill Rosensweig, of Casper, Wyo., Anna and her husband, Harold Feldt, of St. Ansgar, Shirley Fiser, of Charles City, and Ruby and her husband, Larry Fjetland, of Chester.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Randy; daughter-in-law, Sandy Kozak; brother, Keith and his wife, Mary Ann Gunsallus; granddaughter, Jeanine Lynn Hockens; and one grandson at birth.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville, with the Rev. Ray Atwood officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Conway Funeral Home in Riceville, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. scripture service.
