Rock TownshipOle Peterson, 95, Osage's oldest resident, and one of its three remaining Civil War veterans, passed away early Saturday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bertha Larson, after many months of feeble health. Although 95 years of age, Mr. Peterson had retained his faculties to a remarkable degree.
He was born near Stavanger, Norway, March 8, 1841, and came to America with the family 86 years ago. From 1850 until 1855 he lived in Illinois; then came to Mitchell County and settled on a farm in Rock Township.
Mr. Peterson enlisted in Company K. Seventh Iowa regiment, in the cavalry volunteers, February 26, 1863, and served throughtout the war. He saw action in two engagements, and was mustered out at Sioux City, August 22, 1866.
A primitive mode of battle was encountered by soldiers of the wilderness, with Indians and buffalo about them. Until his death he bore a scar from an Indian arrow that grazed his head, when engaged with his regiment in putting down Indian uprisings in the Dakotas. He spent two and a half years proving up his soldiers' claim in North Dakota, and outside of that time and his army service was a continuous resident of Mitchell County.
He was married to Elsie Iverson at St. Ansgar, August 2, 1867. For eighteen years he operated the parental farm in Rock Creek, then moved to Osage fifty-three years ago. Since his wife's death in 1927, he has lived with three of his children, Mrs. Walton Worseldine, Edward Peterson and for the past seven years with Mrs. Bertha Larson. Another daughter, Mrs. E. C. Olson, lives in Maddock, North Dakota. One daughter preceded him in death.
