Lessly Officiates at Funeral Rites
for Prominent BusinessmanOSAGE, IOWA -- Funeral services were held Friday at the Osage Congregational church, the Rev. Stiles Lessly in charge, for Stanley Smith, 62, who died suddenly of a heart attack Tuesday night after attending a bank meeting at the Home Trust and Savings bank, of which he was vice president.
Born in Osage, he attended school here and graduated from the University of Iowa. He managed several lumber yards in South Dakota for his father and then came to Tripoli to manage the yard there. He was married to Sadie Messenger of Waverly.
About twenty-five years ago Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved to Osage.
Surviving are his widow; two daughters, Mrs. E. L. Willson Jr., of Charles City, and Ruth of Minneapolis, Minn.; one granddaughter, Sally Willson of Charles City; his mother, Mrs. James A. Smith of Osage; five brothers: Fred and Leland of Osage, Lloyd of Spirit Lake, Richard of Hollywood, California, and Merrill of Charles City; and one sister, Mrs. Jessie Leach of Chicago, Illinois.
Burial was in the Osage cemetery.

This community was greatly shocked to learn of the sudden passing of one of its most prominent citizens, Stanley R. Smith, on Tuesday evening last, as the result of a heart attack. While he had been a sufferer from this disease for some yeawrs, yet during the last few months his health was much improved and he had enjoyed a much more active life, engaging his time both in busines and civic activities.
Stanley Rulief Smith was the third son of James A. and Mary Alice (Crego) Smith, born at Osage, Iowa, on January 5, 1881. After completing his education at the Osage high school adn the Cedar Valley Seminary, he attended Grinnell College during the years 1900-1901, and then for the following two years studied law at Iowa University.
Upon the completion of this work he entered the services of the Jas. A. Smith Lumber Company, being very active in the establishment of new yards in South Dakota until 1909, when he purchased a lumber business for himself at Tripoli, Iowa, later on adding a business at Oran, giving these his personal attention until 1919 when he removed to Osage to take the active management of his father's estate. . . .
On February 14, 1912 he was married to Sadie Marie Messenger at Waverly, and they immediately established a home at Tripoli. Here were born their two daughters, Jean Ellen, now Mrs. Elbert L. Willson of Charles City, and Ruth Marie of Osage.
He was chosen to represent Bremer county as state representative for 1917-1918. After his removal to Osage, he was elected its mayor for the term of 1921-1923. He was a member of the Republican State Central Committee from the 4th district, and state treasurer of the Republican organization for the years 1932-1936.
During his youth he attended the Sunday school of the Congregational church, and later identified himself with that church.
He passed away after a very brief illness on June 9, 1942, leaving to mourn his passing his wife; and two daughters, Jean Ellen and Ruth; a granddaughter, Sarah Jean; his mother, Mrs. Mary Alice Smith; his brothers: Fred Crego Smith and Leland A. Smith of Osage, Lloyd G. Smith of Los Angeles, Calif.; Merrill G. Smith of Charles City, and one sister, Mrs. Robert L. Leach of Chicago.
The last rites will be held tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at the Congregational Church in Osage, in charge of his pastor, Rev. Stiles Lessly.
Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.
