Osage Soldier Dies
In Munich, Germany

Mrs. Dorothy Rowland of Waterloo received word from the war department Monday that her husband, Pfc. Herbert Rowland, had died in Munich, Germany, Sunday, November 4. No other particulars were given but a letter is to follow, the announcement said.

Mrs. Rowland and her daughter came to Osage Tuesday. Mrs. Rowland is the former Dorothy Bradwell. Private Rowland was a former resident of Osage.

Waterloo GI Dies Abroad

Pfc Herbert Rowland, 32, whose wife, Dorothy, and daughter, Beverly, 12, live at 1010½ South Street, died in Munich, Germany, on November 4. Mrs. Rowland was notified by the army Monday night. No details of his death were given,

A brakeman for the Waterloo, Cedar Falls & Northern Railroad before entering service on February 29, 1944, Rowland was serving as a teletype operator with Co. C, 746th railroad operating battalion of the army of occupation.

He had been overseas 10 months.

He was born at St. Ansgar, Iowa, February 12, 1913. He attended school at Otranto, Iowa, graduating from the high school there. He came to Waterloo in August of 1937, and went to work for the W.C.F. & N. Railroad on October 16, 1937.

Surviving besides his wife and daughter in Waterloo are his mother, Mrs. Kate Rowland, and a brother, William, both of Osage.

MORE DETAILS OF GI'S DEATH

Osage, Iowa — Mrs. Herbert Rowland of Waterloo, nee Dorothy Bradwell, formerly of Otranto and Osage, received a communication from the commanding officer, Lt. Col. M. Pruett, concerning the death of her husband.

The communication states that Pfc. Herbert Rowland died Nov 4 between 5-5:30, at 136 Evacuation Hospital, Semi-mobile unit, Munich, Germany.

He was buried near Spabold, France, nine miles from Metz, at the U. S. military cemetery and a Protestant chaplain officiated.

Cause of the death was cellulitis of the neck.

Strangely enough, the letter was dated Nov. 16, postmarked Nov. 19, and was just received a few days ago by Mrs. Herbert Rowland, Waterloo. The late Herbert Rowland is a brother of William Rowland, Osage, and son of Kate Rowland, Osage.

LAST RITES HELD -- Services were held at the St. Ansgar Methodist Church for Herbert Warren Rowland, former St. Ansgar resident, who died November 4, 1945, at Munich Germany, from a throat infection. The family was unaware of any illness.

He is survived by his widow, daughter Beverly Jean of Waterloo, Iowa, his mother, Mrs. Katherine Rowland and brother, William, of Osage, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Cora Lang, St. Ansgar.

The body rests in the military cemetery at Spabold, France, nine miles from Metz, Germany.
