LOSES LIFE
IN MISHAPJohn Decker, 65, of Osage, suffocated Monday evening abut 4:20 when a tractor he was driving overturned and pinned him to the ground. He had been paralleling the highway and had apparently driven too high for the tractor to remain in balance.
Decker, working for the county highway department, had been mowing along a county road six and a half miles east of Osage on a county road north of the Bob Hemann farm.
He had been working together with another highway employee, Ben Faas, of Stacyville, who was mowing the other side of the road. Faas didn't notice the overturned tractor until he turned his tractor around.
The men had been working on the stretch of highway all day Monday, according to the county engineer, Bill Groskurth. Decker had been working steadily for the department for the past three years.
He and his wife had just moved to Osage this past summer from McIntire.
This is the fourth motor vehicle accident recorded in the county this year.
Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, at 2 p.m., for Mr. Decker. Merle Roloff of Charles City will be in charge of the services at the Martz-Hutchens Funeral Home in LeRoy, and burial will be in the Wayne Cemetery, McIntire.
John Wesley Decker was born on August 20, 1906, at Burr Oak, Iowa, the son of George and Mary Andersen Decker. As a child he came to McIntire with his parents and received his education there.
Lois Duryee and John Decker were married on September 20, 1930. They continued to live in and near McIntire where he farmed, operated a tavern and later a grocery store, moving to Osage in July of this year. He had been employed by the Mitchell County repair shop since 1965.
He was a member of the McIntire Faith Baptist church.
Surviving are his wife, Lois; one son, Donald Decker of Charles City; one daughter, Mrs. Robert Patton (Sharon) of Gilman; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Dale Duryee of McIntire and Mrs. Francis Jensen of LeRoy; and one brother, Merle Decker of McIntire.
Preceding him in death were his parents, one daughter, Mrs. Mason Fuller, and two sisters.
