Irene Leah Beland, 94, of Madonna Towers in Rochester, Minnesota, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000.
She was born June 21, 1906 in Loda, Illinois, to William and Kathryn (Ryan) Beland. She was raised there. She graduated from high school in Osage, Iowa. She never married.
She moved to Rochester and graduated from St. Mary's Nursing School in 1931. She worked in Minneapolis while completing her BSN degree in Nursing Education and Masters degree in physiology and bio-chemistry. She then taught nursing at the U of M until 1938 when she returned to Rochester and worked at St. Mary's as Clinical supervisor and nursing instructor. In 1947, she moved to Detroit, Mich. where she was a professor of nursing at Wayne State University until she retired in 1980. In 1950, she was a nursing consultant for six months in Chile and Colombia, in South America. She wrote a nursing textbook titled "Clinical Nursing" in 1965. She enjoyed knitting, reading and playing bridge.
She is survived by her brothers and sisters, Ralph Beland of North Port, Fla., Frances Beland of Minneapolis; Margaret Heimer and Phyllis Schmidt, both of Stacyville, Iowa, and Joan Schmidt of Austin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and two brothers.
Service: There will be a funeral mass at Madonna Towers in Rochester at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, with the Rev. Emmitt Tighe officiating. There will be a graveside service at 2 p.m. Friday.
Interment: Visitation Cemetery in Stacyville, Iowa.
Visitation: Friends may call one hour before the service at Madonna Towers. Maken Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
