CEDAR FALLS — Harlan Lee Bell, 66, of Cedar Falls, died Friday, (Aug. 5, 2005) at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, Nev. after suffering a stroke while on vacation.
There will be a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Masonic Temple in Cedar Falls.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar.
Harlan was born on March 5, 1939, in Mower County, Minnesota. He was the oldest of three boys born to John and Ena (Nagle) Bell. Harlan graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1958. He then attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls receiving his bachelor's degree in 1963. He went on to receive his master of arts degree at the University of Iowa in 1971.
During his teaching career he taught at the Vinton School for the Blind, Vinton Public School, Charter Oak-Ute, and Blakesburg. He was a principal in Urbana and professor at Council Bluffs Junior College. He finished his teaching career in Traer, Iowa where he retired in 2001.
Harlan was a member of the Vinton Masonic Lodge No. 62 and the secretary for the Black Hawk Lodge No. 65. He also served as the treasurer of the El Kahir Shine Unit No. 101.
He loved to travel and spent many of his trips visiting family and friends.
Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ena Bell; and his brother, Russell Bell.
He is survived by his brother, Jim (Nancy) Bell; sister-in-law, Sandy Bell; five nieces, Gail (Steve) Smith, Renae Wason, Susan (Dave) Pearl, Dawn (Chris) Standing, and Karen (Chad) Smith; and one nephew, Dean (Becky) Bell.
