NORTHWOOD, IOWA — Richard Alan Hanson, 74, of Northwood died on Thursday (August 12, 2004) at his home in Northwood, after a short battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Wayne Hagen officiating. Burial will be at the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood, where military honors will be presented by VFW Post number 6779, Our Buddies Memorial of Northwood.
Visitation will be held today 5 to 8 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood, Iowa.
Richard (Dick) was born on January 15, 1930, in St. Ansgar, on the family farm during a snowstorm, to Harry and Faye (Noven) Hanson.
He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church, Northwood. He attended high school in St. Ansgar and graduated from Devries Institute in Chicago for electonics.
He served in active duty in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955, being honorably discharged in 1956.
Dick married Evelyn (Evy) Wolff on June 22, 1956, and was later divorced.
Dick served for 45 years on the Northwood Volunteer Fire Company. He was self-employed in his own businesses, Hanson Radio and TV, Northwood; Areo Flight Services, Mason City; Hanson Communications/G&D Auto, Northwood.
His hobbies included flying, camping (motor homing) and fishing.
Dick is survived by his sons, Rick (Diane) Hanson of Northwood and Ron (Jody) Hanson of Rochester, Minn.; four grandchildren: Kyle and Cody of Northwood, Ashley and Angela of Rochester; a sister, Shirly (Dennis) Lind of Rochester; sisters-in-law, Ruth Hanson of St. Ansgar, Haddie Hanson of Northwood, and special friend, Marjorie A. Smith of London, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, William Hanson of St. Ansgar and Marlin Hanson of Northwood.
